Three phases in the diffusion of Simmel's thought within the American sociological community are identified. His influence is then traced, first, in the area of general theoretical orientations, and second, with respect to research traditions on the stranger and social distance.

Georg Simmel (1858 – 1918) Georg Simmel is known for his contributions to sociology and philosophy. In 1881, Simmel received his PhD from the University of Berlin. (Later, Heidelberg University granted him an honorary doctorate.) His dissertation used the Kantian theory of monads as this pertained to the nature of matter.

Simmel introduced the term sociation that he believed to be the major field of study for the students of society. Sociation implies the particular patterns and forms in which human beings relate to each other and interact. According to him society is nothing more than all the individuals who constitute it. Simmel’s sociology first became influential in the United States through translations and commentaries by Albion W. Small (1854–1926), one of the first important American sociologists.
